Alfa 156 Emissions failure and flat-spot

Alfa Romeo Emissions Mot failure

The emissions on an Alfa Romeo failed the Mot test and we had to investigate why. We noticed that the oxygen content within the exhaust gases was too high, which led us to believe an air leak was the fault. On closer inspection of the inlet manifold pipe work after the air mass meter (which measures amounts of air drawn into engine), we discovered a split in the main air ducting. This would allow ‘un-metered’ air to access the engine, and because the engine management system hasn’t allowed for it, a lower amount of fuel would be injected, causing the engine to run too weak and fail the emissions test.
